Customer Info / Context
MarineGuard is a market-leading superyacht security company providing turnkey solutions including intruder detection, diver tracking, drone security and more. MarineGuard is an original equipment manufacturer, developing and installing products on some of the largest superyachts in the world.
Issue / Challenge
When installing a security system on a yacht, bespoke solutions are often required for each vessel. To house their security sensors, MarineGuard required a low volume batch of electronics enclosures that can be ordered on demand and adapted each time to their customer’s needs. Due to the low unit volume required and the bespoke requirements of the design, traditional manufacturing methods such as injection moulding is an invalid solution for their needs.
What are the benefits of using additive manufacturing?
MarineGuard saw key benefits by choosing SLS 3D printing to produce their product.
Economic price for low numbers of units
Short lead time
Manufacture parts on-demand
No need to hold stock
Freedom to edit design between batches
The economic price for low numbers of units and the short lead time required for 3D printing allows MarineGuard to manufacture parts on-demand before an installation. This means they don’t need to hold stock and only produce enclosures that have already been sold. Additive manufacturing gives the freedom to edit design between batches, this is ideal for bespoke installations such as MarineGuards security systems.
Solution
3D printing in PA12 Nylon (SLS) was a successful solution for MarineGuard’s security sensor housings. The enclosures were delivered within our standard lead times, allowing MarineGuard to assemble them with the electronics in time for their installation. Using our vibro polished finish for SLS 3D printing, MarineGuard were able to get smooth, high-quality enclosures for their products that fit the high-quality aesthetic of their brand identity. The orders are delivered within our standard lead times, allowing MarineGuard to make the enclosures to order per installation.
